When Rockwood dog lover Allison Kozak read about the Peterborough Humane Society struggling to feed 85 dogs seized in Havelock, she knew she had to do something to help.
On Dec. 17, the Humane Society executed a warrant and seized the dogs from a private home. Peterborough officials called it one of the worst cases of animal cruelty they have seen.
Many of the dogs, including several puppies, were very thin and malnourished.
“I just felt my stomach drop when I heard the News,” Kozak said. “It was clear their need for food was urgent.”
So over the next week to 10 days, she collected donations from friends and co-workers. And with the help of a Mapleton supplier, was able to purchase 1,200 pounds of high protein dog food.
Paul Spindler, director of sales and marketing with The Great Canadian Dog Food Company, in Moorefield, said his company was happy to help the cause.
“We just wanted to help out for the love of animals,” he said. “I’ve always been big on stuff like that.”
Kozak said she likely could have raised more money, but she wanted to provide the food right away, given the urgency of the situation.
She took a vacation day on Dec. 29 and with the use of her husband’s pick-up truck, delivered the food to shelters in Peterborough, Hamilton, and Orangeville (the latter two locations took in a combined 20 or so dogs to relieve some of the burden for the Peterborough location).
“Even though I’d let them know I was coming they were still taken aback by how much food I delivered,” Kozak said.
She remains very humble about her efforts, although she hopes her story can inspire others.
“I think it’s important to remind everyone that Humane Societies mostly rely on donations so please be generous and support our furry friends,” said Kozak.
