Record-breaking auction at art centre

On Nov. 15, the Macdonald Stewart Art Centre’s annual Beyond the Frame art auction achieved a record profit of $55,000.

Judith Nasby said, “It is inspiring to see such a wonderful response from the community in support of the art centre.

“The profit we received from this event will go towards the art centre’s educational programs, exhibitions, and the collection. In addition to the total profit we achieved, we are very grateful to the many corporate supporters who donated their services, which combined, total in value more than $15,000.”

Auctioneer Jay Mandarino sold 45 art works in the live auction and 20 silent auction items that were donated by senior art students from Centennial CVI and St. James Catholic High School.

The sold-out event attracted a record crowd of more than 200 people.

The five top sellers were:

–  A gouache, linen and handmade paper work, by Guelph’s Cheryl Ruddock, sold for $2,600;

– An ink transfer work on paper, by Guelph artist Martin Pearce, for $1,900;

–  An acrylic painting by Guelph artist Margaret Peter, for $1,800;

– An etching and chine collé work by Elora artist John Kissick, for $1,800; and

–  An oil-on-canvas painting by University of Guelph Master of Fine Art graduate Martin Golland, sold for $1,700.

In addition to the contributions made by artists, volunteers, and buyers, over 35 corporate sponsors supported the fundraiser.
