FERGUS – Author Sonia Day is holding a launch party for her 10th book The Newfoundland Lunch Party, A Sisters of the Soil Novel with Recipes, on Nov. 23 at the Local Pieces Gallery in Fergus.
The Sisters of the Soil are four older women, all passionate gardeners, who meet up in various locations around the world for fun times and good food.
The book is the second in a trilogy chronicling their adventures together.
The first one, set in Mexico, came out during the pandemic. Sonia says inspiration for the series came during her 20 years as a gardening columnist for the Toronto Star.
“I wrote a lot of non-fiction books while with the Star, mostly about plants and how to grow them,” she explains, ”but I met so many colourful characters back then, I wanted to try putting them into stories.”
She chose Newfoundland as the location for the Sisters’ latest escapade because “…it’s wild, beautiful, quirky – and the kind of place that makes a great setting for fiction.”
The Fergus launch will include Newfoundland folk music and an authentic island sweet treat called “moose buttons” made by Day.
Copies of her book will be on sale after her talk.
The book launch by author Sonia Day takes place at Local Pieces Gallery, 126 St. Andrew St. W. in Fergus on Nov. 23 from 2 to 4 pm.
Free admission.
