Council is considering bringing a bit of warmth into February with a 10th anniversary celebration in 2009.
Minto Mayor David Anderson said recently that as of Jan. 1, “We’ll have been in existence in the town of Minto for 10 years. I think there’s been a lot of ideas coming forth. Between the clerk and the recreation department, and probably a couple of ideas over dinner in London at the southwest region [conference].”
He brought forward some of the ideas that had come up.
The town picked Feb. 14 and 15 to celebrate. T he mayor noted that Family Day is on Feb. 16, “so the weekend kind of ties in with it.”
Anderson said it would be family oriented, like a winter carnival. He quipped that the director of recreation and the director of public works could get together and make an outdoor skating rink.
Councillor Rick Hembly joined in asking if they wanted the fire department involved as well to provide the water for the rink.
Other ideas included snowshoeing and cross country skiing.
Another idea was to have a large bonfire, after getting a burning permit, Anderson said.
He suggested if residents kept their Christmas trees, they could all be brought out and create a huge bonfire.
One comment from council was that it might melt the rink.
Anderson said the fire would be far enough away so that wouldn’t happen.
Hembly again asked if the fire department would be needed again.
Anderson said other ideas include serving of hot chocolate and a chili cook-off. “It would be open to all residents of the Town of Minto,” Anderson said.
With those ideas, he advocated the creation of a committee. Members include Anderson, and councillors Judy Dirksen, Barb Burrows, and Tammy Reiner.
