Our beloved Matriarch, 98 years young, left us peacefully on November 1st with family by her side. Peggie was born February 23, 1926 to David and Mary Cook in Brantford, Ontario, where she learned superb secretarial skills. She met and married Bill Dickie in Brantford after he returned from WWII. They lived in Toronto where he studied Optometry and she had her dream job working for the director of Connaught Labs. However, daughter Gini came along in 1948 and disrupted that trajectory. They moved to Fergus, Ontario when Bill graduated to set up his practice. Paul soon arrived and they moved to 680 Colquhoun Street where Phil arrived and that was the family home for 60 years. After the children were all in school, Peggie worked for lawyers Wilson and Jack and then became Bill’s office administrator for his practice until their retirement. Bi-annual Canadian Optometrist conventions enabled them to travel throughout the country, in addition to their family history research excursions to Scotland. Melville United Church figured prominently in Peggie’s life. After her move to her Queen Street condo and Bill’s death in 2012, her church family and her condo family became important sources of socialization and support for which we are very grateful. She considered herself a “good talker”, but she was also an empathetic listener with a spirituality that enabled her to be a caring hospice volunteer for many years. She found much joy in time spent at the family cottage on Lake Erie at Turkey Point, as well as curling, bridge, and her daily Sudoku. Her competitiveness in playing cards included the game of cribbage. If one of her “rules of the game” was ever challenged, she would jokingly say…. “My house…My rules”! That was Mom in a nutshell. She leaves memories of love and laughter to her daughters-in-law, Nancie and Mary Jane, her 4 grandchildren, Chris, Aisha, Erica (Will) and Nico (Maryanne), step-grandson Alessandro (Paola) as well as her 3 great-grandsons, Tyson, Reid and Logan. Visitation will take place on Friday, November 22nd, 2024 from 6:00pm to 8:00pm at the Graham A Giddy Funeral Home, 280 St. David St. S in Fergus, Ontario. Funeral Service will be held at Melville United Church in Fergus at 1:00pm on Saturday, November 23rd, 2024. The Funeral Service will be livestreamed.
