The Wellington (Region 4) 4H team won gold at the Royal in the provincial competition for Go for the Gold.
Miriam Bailey graduates from 4-H this week so this was her final competition in 4-H. What a way to end a stellar career. She has completed 100 clubs – more than anyone in 4H history, I believe. We also had her brother, James, on the team. He turned 12 the day before the competition. He has an amazing knowledge of agriculture and 4-H at that age.
This was the team’s fourth year of competition in Go for the Gold and its hard work paid off with gold.
Royal results
Saturday at the Royal was the Go for the Gold competition. It is similar to Jeopardy with a focus on agriculture, life skills, and current events.
Teams of 4-H members from each region of Ontario played a round robin of five games, then the two highest scoring teams played in the final. The Region 4 team from Wellington County consisted of Heather Aitken, Joel Aitken, Miriam Bailey, Virginia Pantling and alternate James Bailey, with coach Marg Aitken. They had high points at the end of the round robin and came out victorious at the end of the day. This team had studied hard on its own.
The Aitken and Bailey teens also returned to the Royal on Sunday to participate in the square dance competition and placed third in the open class.
