Until recently, Holman Park had only two small trees.
The small neighbourhood park overlooks a storm water retention pond on Holman Crescent at the northeast end of town. As of this week, it is undergoing a transformation, starting with trees.
On Nov. 7, thanks to funding from the Imperial Oil Foundation, two bushy white pines were put in by Douglas Wood Tree Services, of Rockwood.
The next day, a team of volunteer NeighbourWoods Tree Stewards led the planting of 10 native bur oaks, which will eventually reach 15 meters (about 50 feet).
The trees were paid for by the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation and refreshments for the volunteers were donated by PlayPower Canada Ltd.
Within the next few days, the township Parks and Recreation department will be installing a new small children’s play structure and swing set.
“Thanks to corporate funders, Neighbourwoods, and the volunteer tree planters, 12 new native trees are now planted in one of our parks at no cost to the taxpayer.
“This is a perfect example of an effective community partnership,” said Director of Parks and Recreation Andy Goldie.
