Wellington North councillor John Matusinec is looking for a less speedy solution to the timing of traffic lights at Highway 6 and County Road 109 at the south end of Arthur village.
The discussion followed council’s consideration of the controls for the traffic lights in downtown Arthur.
Works Superintendent Gary Williamson asked that a letter be sent to the county asking for financial support since both lights are at the intersection of county roads – if MTO funding does not pan out. He believes the county should split the costs 50:50.
Matusinec subsequently had a question regarding the new traffic lights installed at the south end of Arthur. He first asked who has jurisdiction. Williamson said they would be Wellington North’s once the connecting link work is extended to Jones Baseline.
Matusinec’s issue was who sets up the timing of the lights. Williamson said that would have been done by the MTO.
“The way they have it right now, if you’re coming westbound on 109 and a transport truck loaded goes to gear up [through the intersection] he’s in the middle of the intersection when the light turns yellow,” he said. “It only stays green for 35 to 40 seconds.”
He added anyone following the truck ends up in the middle of the intersection with a red light.
“It’s a very short light,” he said, and he asked if there was any way to have the timing changed. He wondered if whoever set the lights up is aware of the problem.
Williamson said he would ask the MTO to review the matter.
