Minto council approves $3,000 structural grant for two Harriston properties

HARRISTON – Council approved a structural grant of $3,000 for two properties at its Oct. 1 meeting.

Martin Wynja, owner of 8 and 10 Elora Street South in Harriston, applied for the grant to support a roof repair project worth $12,900.

These properties are the home of business “Eh 2 Zed” and used for storage by Acheson’s Pharmasave.

“Being that’s a rather minor structural improvement, staff are supportive of a grant of $3,000,” stated town clerk Annilene McRobb.

The project involves applying liquid rubber roof coating on the building’s flat roof, which will also help maintain the buildings and prevent leaks for the occupants, the staff report notes.

The funds will be provided through the Structural Grant Program which was initiated in 2015 to “encourage significant” investments in improving downtown buildings, added officials.

A variety of elements are considered under this grant program, including:

  • building structural integrity;
  • life safety/emergency;
  • usable and efficient floor space (accessibility);
  • brownfield remediation;
  • improving the environment;
  • upgrading/improving public infrastructure;
  • creating housing;
  • energy efficiency; and
  • enhancing urban design.

After accepting this grant, the remaining 2024 Community Improvement Program budget will be $36,526. The program started with $50,000 at the beginning of the year.

Council received the report for information and approved the grant unanimously.
