Although Arthur village has had a downtown revitalization committee for some time, it was only on Monday night that Wellington North Township councillors officially adopted a mandate and committee membership.
The committee’s mandate is to promote economic growth in the downtown core of the former village of Arthur by working with existing community organizations to secure funding and support for revitalization initiatives.
Some of those responsibilities include the promotion and support of the retail and service business function of the downtown core.
The committee is also to encourage local organizations to work together for common goals for the downtown as it is outlined in the streetscape plan prepared by Ska and Associates, as well as downtown revitalization proposals supported by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture Food and Rural Affairs, or other government agencies.
As well, the intent is to improve downtown infrastructure with the ultimate goal of beautifying the downtown core of Arthur.
The committee structure is to include a Wellington North councillor, members of the public and the business community, members of local service organizations, and a member of Wellington North’s economic development committee.
The following are officially appointed as members of that committee: chairman Mary Schmidt, councillors Bob Mason and John Matusinec, and community members John Walsh, John Dalley, Joe Legate, Lynn Goranson, Faye Craig, Darryl Woods, and Ralph Roelofsen.
When councillor Dan Yake asked if that was an update to a previous mandate, Chief Administrative Officer and Clerk Lori Heinbuch explained there was no mandate before.
Shortly after that, council adopted the recommendation originally brought forward by its economic development committee for the adoption of the mandate and appointment of its members.
