New lighting on fire trucks unveiled for press, councillors

“It’s like night and day,” John Scott quipped on Monday night.

The Guelph-Eramosa councillor was referring to the demonstration by local firefighters of the department’s new stadium lighting devices.

The equipment, which cost about $21,000 to outfit both  the pumper truck and rescue truck, lit up the municipal parking lot in an impressive demonstration of the effectiveness of the new lights.

Deputy Fire Chief Lyle Quan explained the Guelph-Eramosa department is one of the only county departments to have the stadium lighting, which came in particularly handy at a house fire a couple of months ago.

“It was quite spectacular how well it lit up the area,” Quan said.

He explained the lights not only make the job of firefighters much easier, but they also improve safety for all emergency personnel at the scene.

Most township trucks already had lighting, but nothing like the new stadium lights, which are much more powerful and versatile.

The new lights were installed over the last two years – 2007 for the pumper and 2008 for the rescue truck – Quan said. He added it’s now hard to imagine what it was like without the new equipment.
