Council believes ‘Big Dig’ going well

Mount Forest residents may have time for Tim Hortons, but for a few weeks this fall there may be more of a challenge getting there.

In general, Wellington North Mayor Mike Broomhead believes work on the Big Dig reconstruction work in the town is going well.

Works Superintendent Gary Williamson confirmed that planned work on the Highways 6 and 89 intersection will be done this fall.

Williamson explained the work includes new signal lights and the addition of a right hand lane for northbound traffic on Highway 6.

There may be some detouring of traffic, but he said the Ministry of Transportation’s intent is to keep Highway 89 open during the construction.

At the same time, Broomhead said there have been a number of questions regarding the possibility the third downtown block north of Wellington Street will be done this year.

“The north block won’t be done this year under any conditions,” Broomhead said.

That part of the project is set for spring 2009.

Broomhead added that if the weather cooperates, by early to mid November, contractors hope to have a layer of asphalt on the two blocks currently under construction.
