Council endorsed a grant request from the Seniors’ Centre of Excellence for the use of municipally-owned recreation facilities to offer its walking group and learn to run programs.
The value of the facilities amounts to $7,748.
The programs runs in the Clifford hall, and the Harriston and Palmerston auditoriums.
Recreation Director David Stonley said the programs help keep seniors more active.
In the past, the venues were made available for seniors to come and walk. Now, he said, there is a structured program through the Seniors’ Centre for Excellence.
At that point, Stonley said it seems fitting that a fee be applied.
He said that even then, the fee is very attractive financially at $26 per use.
Stonley said the walking programs operates three days per week in each of the communities, while Harriston offers a running program as well.
He said walking classes are timed, but there is a revolving crowd.
Council quickly approved the grant.
Minto then approved the donation of the hall rental for the Clifford Recreation Association to hold a volunteer appreciation night.
The value of that donation was $200.
Councillors also approved a request for a donation to cover the Harriston Nursery School request to cover the hall rental cost to use the Harriston-Minto community complex to hold a fundraising bake sale and yard sale on Sept. 12.
A similar donation was made to the Palmerston Nursery School in April.
