A recent boiler failure left a number of swimmers in the cold at the Palmerston swimming pool.
Recreation Director David Stonley spoke to council recently about the steps taken to address the chilly reception from patrons on the emergency.
“No one likes a cold pool in July,” he said.
Stonley said he rearranged his holidays to address the issue of the failed boiler and within a day (Thursday) had tracked down a replacement in Toronto.
That replacement was picked up on the Friday, the old one removed on Monday, the new one installed Tuesday, and fired up on Wednesday.
He said the boiler would have been on line sooner, but was delayed because of orders from the manufacturer.
“I realize there were a number of irate phone calls from parents,” Stonley said.
However he also said most people felt reassured once it was explained the steps to get the work done as quickly as possible.
Councillor Rick Hembly asked how cold the water temperatures had dropped to – for programs to be cancelled.
Stonley explained water temperatures had dropped to 64F.
He said a mass phone call was initiated to let people know what was happening.
It remains unclear if there will be any compensation from the firm that provided the original boiler – which was installed only in 1999, with a ten-year life expectancy.
