ELORA – Aug. 4 marked another successful Battle of Waterloo and Industry Day at the Grand River Raceway in Elora. The Battle of Waterloo was first staged at Elmira Raceway in 1998 as the highlight of the track’s signature event, Industry Day. Elmira Raceway, which closed in November of 2003, was owned and operated by the Woolwich Agricultural Society (W.A.S.). Industry Day is held annually on the Civic Holiday, the first Monday of August, and is one of Canadian harness racing’s most celebrated events, attracting racing fans province-wide and beyond. This year’s event drew spectators from as far away as Australia. Eighteen-year-old Doug McNair had a masterful drive to pilot his father’s horse, Trail Boss, to a half-length finish over a hard-closing Josh Seelster in the $300,000 Battle of Waterloo signature race. Trainer Gregg McNair, Doug’s father, had second place finishes in the race in 1999 and again in 2000. The winner’s share was $150,000. photos by Mike Robinson
