A new enabling garden is being established behind the library and community centre here.
Several years ago, the Guelph Township Horticultural Society received money from the estate of Marion Brennan, a past member. After the new library was built some of that money was used to place a bench and a small garden ornament in the garden that the society had planted at the front of the library.
The society’s attention then turned to possible plans for the beautification of the back of the building. The site seemed the perfect place to install a garden in Brennan’s memory. As the area is easily accessible to all who come to the library, community centre or park, the enabling aspect of the garden became an added attraction.
With the support of Township of Guelph-Eramosa and the Wellington County, a concrete pad, benches, a water feature, and the footings for a shade structure have been installed. A variety of trees, shrubs and plants are being chosen for their ability to incite all of the senses. Some of them have been planted and the others will be planted this spring. There are still three raised planters, a shed and some additional plantings to add once the funds have been raised.
The raised planters will be made available to the residents of nearby Community Living and Hopewell homes.
On May 27 from 5 to 8pm, the Guelph Township Horticultural Society invites people to purchase and plant a perennial in the garden. Perennials selected to incite the senses or to attract birds and butterflies will be available to purchase and plant in a designated spot. There will be various price points so that all will be able to participate. Strawberries, cake, and refreshments will be served.
