Fergus Truck Show a success

For some it was a field of dreams, for others a sea of trucks on display.

Last weekend the Fergus Community Sportsplex and area once again hosted the annual Fergus Truck Show.

This year 429 trucks registered for the show, and combined with tradeshow vendors, entertainment, shows, tractor pulls, and a demolition derby, it was an action-packed weekend.

And for every vehicle seen at the show, hours of preparation was involved.

Administrative Assistant Mardi Billings, one of this year’s organizers, said this year there were 53 different classifications and each truck can enter three of those classes.

In addition, there is the public choice category for best truck in the show. She noted there is a long list of criteria upon which trucks are judged – from the condition of the tires to bugs on the windshield.

Billings said there were 280 vendors on site. In addition to the truck show, this year featured a demolition derby and a rollover competition.

Billings estimated 32 community groups assisted in keeping this year’s show on track – from helping visitors park cars to acting as pit crew members.

“Every area of the show is helped out by a local service club or group in some way,” she said.

In terms of space, the show keeps growing from year to year – from show grounds, to camping to parking. Billings said the main showgrounds were booked full three weeks before the show and even overflow areas needed to be expanded by renting additional farm fields for camping and parking the big rigs.

The Fergus Truck Show is a not-for-profit corporation that started in 1986 as a one-time event to raise funds for an addition to the community centre, and to introduce area residents to the trucking industry.
