Helen was born in Lekawica, Poland. She emigrated to Canada with her then husband Jack, son Mark and stepson Albert, travelling on the MS Batory and settling in Toronto in June 1960. Helen trained as a nurse, graduating from the Osler School of Nursing in 1971 – one of her proudest achievements. Her nursing career spanned 25 years, most of it at Toronto’s Sunnybrook Hospital. Many of her work colleagues became lifelong friends. Helen had a curious nature and read widely. She travelled extensively, both within Canada and to many destinations around the world. She loved the arts, enjoying outings to the opera, ballet and theatre. In her retirement, Helen maintained her love of gardening and indulged in artistic pursuits such as creative writing, sketching and painting. In 2018 she moved from Toronto to live at the Elliott Community in Guelph, where she found new friends. Helen will be dearly missed by her children, Mark (Lorraine Bell) and Sandy (Stephen Hall), and grandchildren, Lisa, Kayla and Matthew. There will be two gatherings for family and friends to celebrate Helen’s Life. Please join family in Toronto at Albert and Brenda Weisdorf’s Residents’ Lounge at 1201 Steeles Ave. W., on Friday, June 28 from 1 to 4pm. Residents of the Elliott Community and friends are welcome to join us at The Ellridge Residents Lounge, 172 Metcalfe, in Guelph, Ontario in the afternoon, on Sunday, June 30, from 1 to 4pm. Arrangements entrusted to Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel (519-822-0051 / www.wallcustance.com). Those wishing to make a donation in Helen’s memory might consider the Canadian Cancer Society or Hospice Wellington. A tree will be planted in memory of Helen J. Weisdorf in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
