CENTRE WELLINGTON – The first of what is expected to become an annual scholarship in memory of former Fergus hockey player Jeff Snowe was awarded this month to two local teens.
Owen Bright, a goalie who is heading to Brock University to study accounting in the fall, and Rory Peters, who is studying engineering at Western University, each received a $1,000 Jeff Snowe Memorial Scholarship toward their studies.
Snowe, who grew up in Alma and played hockey as a child in Fergus, was killed in a car accident in March of 2023 at the age of 55.
As an adult, Snow had continued to be involved with the Centre Wellington Minor Hockey Association (CWMHA) as a coach.
“He has two sons that play in Fergus and Jeff helped out on the bench every year,” sister Tanya Snowe stated in an email to the Advertiser.
She explained the family wanted to establish a scholarship in her brother’s memory specifically for a U18 player heading to university or college.
“He loved being on the ice with his sons and their teammates,” the email stated. “Jeff also believed in the importance of education.”
The scholarship will be awarded to “a graduating U18 local league or representative player,” who demonstrates good sportsmanship and leadership skills and is a strong team player, it said.
Applicants were required to submit a short essay explaining why they were the best choice for the award.
Applications are reviewed by the family and CWMHA.
