Mapleton Township will be participating in a special ceremony here on Aug. 2 at 11am honouring the hamlet’s black heritage.
A recent letter to Mayor John Green from Ian Easterbrook indicates that the Ontario Historical Society will unveil an historical plaque at the ceremony in recognition of the hamlet’s “early black community.”
Easterbrook said the Wellington County Historical Society, of which he is secretary, has worked over the past few years “to ensure this important recognition takes place.”
He thanked the township for digging a post hole for the support post and plaque, and also for providing seating for the anticipated crowd of about 200 people.
