This past weekend the Canadian Baton Twirling Association held their World qualifying contest at Conestoga College in Kitchener. Twenty four athletes from across Canada were selected for the team to represent Canada at the next World Championships, in Ghent Belgium, April 2009.
Wellington county resident, Mackenzie Ross , will be competing in four events at the World competition
Mackenzie is no stranger to world competition however, as she made Canada’s last world team 3 years ago and was the youngest athlete on the floor in Eindhoven, Holland. The World Competition draws approximately 1700 athletes from 21 countries.
Ten year old Mackenzie is a Puslinch resident and grade 6 student at Aberfoyle Public School. She began baton twirling with the Spinergy Baton Club in Cambridge under the direction of coach Mimi Brazil when she was five years old. In preparation for the World qualifier she spent many hours in local gyms, up to six times a week for the past year. She has travelled to Nova Scotia, New York, Florida, Ohio competing in contests to gain experience and sharpen her skills over the past year.
She is taking a couple of days off after the busy weekend then it’s off to Notre Dame University, Indiana later this month with her team for a week of competition.
