ERIN – More than 20 farms and a variety of prepared food vendors and artisans are expected to bring their wares to the Erin Farmers’ Market this season.
“From just-picked fresh fruits and vegetables, to heritage meats, baking, jams, pickles, cut flowers, wine, cider and honey, it really is possible to do much of your grocery shopping at the market each week,” market co-ordinator Jennifer Schmelter said in a news release announcing the market’s 12th season.
The season kicks off Thursday June 20 from 3 to 6:30pm at the Agri-dome at the Erin Fairgrounds, but this year, shoppers can also enjoy the market on some weekends.
“In response to customer feedback and thanks to sponsorship from Farmers’ Markets Ontario and the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, the Erin Farmers’ Market is also introducing a monthly Sunday afternoon market,” the release said.
Sunday was chosen to accommodate requests from customers for a weekend market, while also supporting vendors who already take part in Saturday markets elsewhere, it said.
The following “Know Your Farmer” themed markets will take place on Sundays from noon to 4pm:
• June 23 –Gardening Day
• July 21 – Erin Ram Rodeo weekend, Protein Day
• Aug. 18 – World Honey Bee Day
• Sept. 22 – Harvest Festival
Thursday markets will continue each week from 3 to 6:30pm in the Agri-dome until Sept. 26, with vendors including 21 farms, eight prepared food vendors, and 11 artisans.
“If you’ve promised yourself to eat local, there’s never been a better time than now,” Schmelter stated.
