Police beat: Two Guelph men charged with theft-related crimes

ERIN – Two Guelph men have been charged with theft-related crimes here.

Wellington County OPP officials say police responded to a call for suspicious activity at a business on Thompson Crescent in Erin on March 23 at about 7:45am.

Robert Garceau-Goudreault, 36, of Guelph, was charged with two counts of theft under $5,000. 

Christopher Kirkwood, 46, of Guelph, was charged with possession of property obtained by crime (under $5,000) and failing to comply with a release order. 

Kirkwood was held for bail and Garceau-Goudreault was to appear in Guelph court on May 14.

Stolen vehicle

GUELPH – On April 2 at about 12:45am a Wellington County OPP officer was monitoring traffic on Niska Road. 

Police say the officer stopped the driver “of a stolen white pickup truck.”

Brandon Chandler Dasrath, 27, of Mississauga, was charged with possession of property obtained by crime (over $5,000). He was to appear in Guelph court on May 7.

Long weekend charges

ORILLIA – “It was a tragic Victoria Day long weekend in Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) jurisdictions, with four people killed in separate road collisions and three boaters losing their lives.”

That’s how OPP officials opened a recent report on activity over the long weekend.  

The OPP laid close to 14,700 traffic-related charges during Canada Road Safety Week, which ran from May 14 to 20.

“Officers issued 7,860 speeding charges across the province over and above the 204 stunt driving/racing charges they laid against other aggressive drivers” police stated.

The OPP also laid the following charges during the campaign:

– 254 for impaired driving;

– 158 distracted driving;

– 155 for careless driving;

– and 901 for not wearing a seat belt (drivers and passengers).

“The OPP thanks all drivers and other road users who did their part to help keep the motoring public safe during the campaign and encourages everyone to do so throughout the year,” police stated.    

Driving charges

MAPLETON – On March 22 at about 3:15pm a Wellington County OPP officer monitoring traffic on Wellington Road 7 stopped  the driver of a black pickup truck. 

A 46-year-old driver from Cargill, was charged with  driving without insurance, using unauthorized plates, improper brakes on a trailer, improper muffler on a vehicle, improper means of attachment, driving an unsafe vehicle and failing to display an inspection sticker. 

The defendant is to appear in Guelph court on July 17.

Even more driving charges

MINTO – On March 22 at about 7pm a Wellington County OPP officer monitoring traffic on Highway 9 stopped the driver of a black SUV.

A 52-year-old driver from Clifford was charged with driving without insurance, failing to apply for a permit,  failing to yield to traffic, driving without plates, being a G1 driver and not accompanied by a qualified driver and three counts of driving while suspended.

The defendant is to appear in Guelph court on July 17.
