Provincial Constable Sarah Van Norman Honoured by Guelph Police Service with Chief’s Commendation for Policing Excellence
On June 24, Ontario Provincial Police Constable Sarah Van Norman, was presented the “Chief’s Commendation for Policing Excellence” by Guelph Police Chief Rob Davis and Deputy Chief Brent Eden who nominated Cst. Van Norman for the award.
Cst. Van Norman received this recognition for the role she played in ensuring all residents were out of an apartment building on Woolwich Street in Guelph, after she noticed flames and smoke shooting out of a second floor window on August 25th 2008. Cst. Van Norman courageously entered the actively burning structure to climb stairs to the top floor where there were two apartments. One apartment was empty and the other door was closed. While she pounded and yelled at the closed door to alert the tenant, the smoke grew thicker forcing her to exit the building. It was as a result of her determined pounding and yelling that a resident who was sleeping in the unit was awakened and thus able to safely escape the burning building.
Her heroic actions are recognized and appreciated by all members of the Guelph community.
