While no one disputed the benefits of composting, Wellington North here are not ready to support a proposal by Minto council to have compost facilities built at county dumps and transfer stations.
Councillor John Matusinec said that locally, materials can be taken to All Treat, in Arthur.
“A composting facility at every dump site could be quite costly,” he said.
Works Superintendent Gary Williamson said that a number of years back Mount Forest had considered the idea of creating its own composting site. However, upon investigation, Williamson said building a facility to meeting regulations was extremely expensive and someone needed to be on site all the time the facility was open.
In addition, scales were needed for weights of incoming and outgoing materials.
As a result, Mount Forest chose not to proceed with the proposal.
“I foresee this as being very expensive … even if it were only implemented in a few locations.. I’m sure the costs have not gone down since we looked at it,” Williamson said.
