The Wellington County Museum’s summer art workshops for adults provide an opportunity to paint outdoors in a friendly group with an instructor who provides guidance.
Nan Hogg, the program co-coordinator, said “Sometimes people are hesitant about painting outdoors on their own, or feel overwhelmed by the expanse of landscape in front of them. Our teachers can help students through the practical and artistic challenges of painting on site and give them the support that they need.”
There are 20 week-long courses offered between July 7 and Aug. 1. Five of them concentrate on working outdoors.
Scott Abbott will be the instructor for Landscapes in Oils, the week of July 14 to 18. It will cover basic approaches to oil painting and practical tips for working outdoors. A similar course using acrylic paints instead of oils will be offered July 28 to Aug. 1. Landscapes in Acrylics will be taught by Nan Hogg.
Hogg’s workshop for beginners in water colours will also include some outdoor work. Participants in Watercolour Landscapes for Beginners, July 14 to 18, will spend about a third of their week outdoors, weather permitting.
Bonnie Steinberg’s Watercolour Landscapes with Architectural Elements is suitable for painters at any level and will concentrate on local architecture. That workshop takes place July 21 to 25.
There will be a presentation for students on the joys of painting outdoors with a direct and colourful medium. Pastels en Plein Air runs July 21 to 25.
Other workshops are offered in print making, water colours, acrylic, fibre and book arts.
