Camelot at Minto could well reshape the face of Harriston in the coming years.
Recently, the farm at the north end of Harriston, was sold by Ron Leslie to B.G. Schickedanz Homes Inc.
The property lies on the north side of Highway 9 behind the Tim Hortons and comprises the majority of remaining land currently zoned for development within the town of Harriston.
For Leslie, its the completion of a decades long goal.
Following a Minto council meeting on May 21, mayor David Anderson commented that the Leslie plan of subdivision has been on the books for the past 15 to 20 years.
Anderson also noted there are still a number of steps required in the process, such as finalization of a site plan agreement – including municipal services.
Anderson said Harriston has the capacity to accommodate the growth, and noted Minto’s efforts over the past few years with its water and sewage treatment services.
Though he hoped the project could begin relatively soon, Anderson said nothing official is set for a deadline. He said Leslie was excited about the recent sale, but that the basic site plan was established years ago.
“The developers have done a lot of background work already, and we look forward to working with them in the future.”
Anderson stated the town began discussions on the project about a year ago.
The plan for Camelot on Minto includes roughly 165 homes and lots of mixed use development – including parkland.
The fourth phase of the development includes a condominium and a midrise apartment building.
“It’s all good News,” said Anderson.
He said Minto continues to be open for business and as costs rise in the Greater toronto Area, prospective homeowners are increasingly looking to rural areas for homes.
“We’ve been preparing for that growth.”
He said Leslie was fortunate to connect with a developer who realizes the potential for growth in northern Wellington.
