Wallenstein residents say Yatton Sideroad speed limit is ‘excessive’

Residents of Wallenstein say the speed limit on the Yatton Sideroad should be reduced to 50km/hour.

“This is the only road in town that still permits a speed of 80km/hour through the residential area,” stated a letter sent to the township and signed by 14 residents of Yatton Sideroad.

The letter indicated that Regional Road 85 is posted as having a 60km/hour limit as well as a being designated a community safety zone, and when entering Wallenstein from Wellesley Township there is a 50km/h limit in an area with fewer residences than there are on Yatton Sideroad.

Residents also feel the nearby Trans Canada walking trail presents another incentive to lower the speed limit.

“Given the excessive speed vehicles currently travel, it is impossible to foresee approaching vehicles coming over the hill, leaving little time to cross safely,” the letter stated.

To address the situation, residents are not only asking for a reduced speed limit, but also better signs at the hamlet’s entrance the town to let drivers know of the change.

Mayor John Green said council should formally receive the letter and discuss the matter at a later time.

Councillor Mike Downey asked how the township will ensure the issue does not get forgotten.  Green replied the letter will be forwarded to the township’s Public Works Director for a report.
