Smile Cookies support student nutrition programs

GUELPH – Smile cookies are back at Tim Hortons, and people have until May 5 to buy the treats to support local student nutrition programs.

The Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington has been chosen as the charity of choice for the annual fundraiser by 25 Tim Hortons locations in the Guelph and Wellington area.

Proceeds from cookie sales will help the more than 100 student nutritions programs supported by the Children’s Foundation’s Food and Friends Program.

“According to the Income Security for Food Security campaign, one in four children in Ontario live in food insecure homes,” Children’s Foundation executive director Karyn Kirkwood said in a news release.

“That is an unsettling fact, and we see that in our student nutrition programs, where sadly too many kids are needing to rely on what they receive at school as their main source of food in a day,” she stated.

Last year’s Smile Cookie Campaign raised more than $183,000 for the Children’s Foundation, which equates to more than 73,000 meals for local students, the release said.

“We are deeply grateful for the generous support of our local Tim Hortons owners and their teams who raise critical funds to ensure that all children have the nutritious food they need to thrive and learn at school,” Kirkwood stated.
