GUELPH – The Guelph Humane Society (GHS) is excited to launch a new program that offers experiential learning opportunities for youth looking to gain experience with animals through its new Youth Apprenticeship Program (YAP).
Beginning on April 20, YAP is a 10-week course that provides youth in Grades 7 to 10 with an in-depth look into shelter operations.
“The course covers a broad range of topics that are central to the humane society’s activities,” said manager of community programs and outreach Katherine Leonard.
“Youth enrolled in the program will develop key skills in pet first aid, animal care, animal services, and fundraising.”
‘Exclusive experiences’
Through interactive animal experiences and hands-on learning, GHS’s YAP program will provide an opportunity for young people to develop leadership skills and build knowledge of animal welfare best practices, with the opportunity to earn volunteer hours through exclusive experiences.
“Traditionally, our educational programming has been geared towards a much younger audience, through our GHS Critter Camps and Junior Humane Club,” said Leonard.
“We are excited to provide hands-on training for youth who may be interested in the animal welfare or veterinary fields.”
Registration
Registration is now open and the cost of this program is $299 for a 10-week course.
Certain sessions/weeks will provide youth with volunteer hours.
Given the immersive nature of this course, there are only 10 spaces available, so interested applicants are encouraged to register soon for this exciting opportunity.
