Wellington North council has yet to decide the fate of the old Mount Forest arena, and there seems to be no clear answer in sight.
On Monday night, councillor Bob Mason, chairman of Wellington North’s recreation committee, sought some direction in future plans for the facility.
Recreation minutes noted that the ammonia used in the old arena was pumped out and tanked, and that the compressors will still need to be tagged or removed.
The receiver tank still needs to be taken away, and that could cost between $4,500 to $5,200. Mount Forest facility manager Mark MacKenzie asked about his role and responsibilities after the move to the new Sports complex.
MacKenzie was told that the recreation department is still responsible for the old facility.
However, Mason commented that recreation did not budget to keep both facilities open. and the township needs to look at this, he said.
Councillor Ross Chaulk said until the fate of the old arena is decided, “Obviously, we have to maintain the old arena – at least to bare bones standards.”
He anticipated the costs would be a minimum of $1,000 per week just to cover the insurance on the building. But when queried when a decision can be expected, the answers remained fuzzy.
Mayor Mike Broomhead said two or three solid proposals are being considered. Options could include a purchase, leasing, or a straight takeover.
However, specifics of the proposals were not forthcoming.
Broomhead noted council had a verbal proposal from the Mount Forest agricultural society as well, but nothing in writing yet.
There is no deadline at this time, Broomhead said.
