GUELPH/ERAMOSA – The Grand River Conservation Authority (GRCA) is ready to break ground on a new Guleph Lake Nature Centre.
On April 23 at 5pm Guelph/Eramosa Mayor Chris White will be attending a ceremonial ribbon cutting to kickstart the construction, and he said anyone is welcome to attend.
The construction is expected to cost just over $2 million and be completed by Dakon Construction Limited. Dakon, with the lowest of seven bids, was awarded the tender during a March 22 board meeting.
A GRCA report states the centre will “bring people together with nature from an early age – to learn, experience nature and the environment around them, and promote an ethic of stewardship in the Grand River watershed.
“The new centre will immerse visitors into a dynamic, environmental learning experience from the moment they arrive on-site and throughout their enture stay.”
Plans for the centre have been in the works since 2011.
The building has been redesigned to cut costs, and will be smaller than initially planned.
The building will have two classrooms.
It will be a wooden building with mostly wooden siding, and a south-facing sloping roof made of recycled metal, suitable for installing solar panels.
