ALMA – The Wellington County Farm and Home Safety Association (WCFHSA) is hosting it’s fifth annual pancake breakfast at the Alma Community Hall on March 2 from 9 to 11:45am. It’s a free family event.
The one-day event focuses on children’s safety around the farm and home.
“With spring just around the corner it’s a good time to review safety ideas with the entire family,” stated WCFHSA board member Walter Grose in a press release.
“It’s our goal to teach the farming community about safety prior to the busy season, in hopes that the message is passed on around the kitchen table to all family members. If one injury can be prevented, or one life can be saved, we have accomplished something from hosting the pancake breakfast.”
“Electrical, first aid safety, ATV, grain bin, chemical, stop-think-act, gun and PTO safety booths will be set up around the Alma Community hall,” Grose explained.
“Lectric Larry (aka Larry Mullin) of North Waterloo Hydro’s Hazard Hamlet is popular with kids from all ages. Kids like to participate in his presentation – shouting out warnings about farm and home problems they discover in Hazard Hamlet.”
The day provides useful information on safety for both adults and children in and around the farm and home. Passports will be given to participants upon arrival and they will be stamped as they visit each booth. Once the child completes the passport they can enter a draw for a farm toy.
“Safety Sam” the clown (aka Walter Grose) will also be on hand to answer safety questions.
“Kids find it easy to approach me to ask questions when I am dressed up as a clown. We talk about some serious things but need to keep their interest – especially the young kids – as Safety Sam I can do that” added Grose.
Organizers note the breakfast menu is popular with guests so it will remain the same, including pancakes, sausage and real maple syrup donated by Alma maple syrup producer Warren Trask.
The event is free but the county association is accepting donations, which will be used to promote safety in Wellington County.
