ARTHUR – Police are seeking an arrest warrant for a Vaughan resident they say is responsible for stealing a bank card from a vehicle here last September.
After someone tried using the card shortly after it was stolen, the OPP initially charged a Newmarket man with several crimes – but it turns out the actual suspect was posing as the man and falsely provided his name to police.
All charges against the Newmarket man have since been dropped.
Police say a 38-year-old from Vaughan will be charged with possession of property obtained by crime (under $5,000), possession of break-in instruments, mischief (under $5,000), unauthorized use of credit card and identity fraud.
On Sept. 18, someone broke the window of a vehicle parked on George Street in Arthur and stole items from inside the vehicle.
“Officers responded to a local business when a bank card stolen from the car was being used and arrested an individual,” police stated.
The Newmarket man originally charged told the Advertiser this week of the “identity theft,” and the newspaper informed police, who sent out the corrected press release the next day.
