WELLINGTON COUNTY – Wellington County 4-H members began the new year Jan. 3 to 5 with a 4-H sewing club at the home of June Switzer. 23 members met with leaders June and Theresa and several helpers each day.
At the first meeting, members learned how to use a basic sewing machine, cutting table and ironing station.
They then learned how fast the sewing machine stitched by beginning to use the peddle with their hands, then move it to the foot.
4-H members also learned the safety rules of sewing machines, irons and cutting wheels, and how to make a Kleenex holder.
After the Kleenex holders were complete, other projects commenced.
The second day, most members continued with their second projects. The junior members worked on pajama pants and the senior members worked on special individual projects.
“We learned how to improvise on patterns when there isn’t enough fabric. Some put strips down the sides to make the legs wider, some put cuffs on the bottom to make them longer and some put lace at the bottom to keep the length,” said Wellington County 4-H officials.
On the third day, all projects started got finished and some members made a few other small projects.
“We want to thank Karen, Carol, Betty, Joanne, Margie, Grace, Liz, Linda and Lauren who came to assist us with our machines and projects over the three days.”
