Art Gallery of Guelph calls for Middlebrook Prize submissions

GUELPH – The Art Gallery of Guelph (AGG) announced the call for submissions for the 2024 Middlebrook Prize for Young Canadian Curators.

Founded in 2012, the Middlebrook Prize is awarded annually to an emerging Canadian curator who is under 30 with the aim to foster social innovation and curatorial excellence in Canada.

Hosted and administered by AGG, the winner is selected by a jury of arts leaders and receives a $5,000 honorarium and mentorship in the development of an exhibition at AGG.

The 2024 Middlebrook Prize jury is composed of Alyssa Fearon, director/curator at Dunlop Art Gallery; Tarah Hogue, curator and writer; and Renée van der Avoird, associate curator of Canadian Art, Art Gallery of Ontario.

“The Middlebrook Prize has a powerful impact for not only the applicants, but the cultural sector more broadly,” said AGG Director Shauna McCabe.

“Supporting young professionals at a critical point in their careers, the winners are among the country’s best and brightest emerging curators with a clear sense of the transformative potential of the arts.”

By supporting and mobilizing Canadian creative talent, the Middlebrook Prize aims to inspire positive social change in an era of ongoing and unprecedented economic, environmental, social and cultural challenges.

Submissions will be accepted until Jan. 26, 2024 at 5pm. The winner will be announced in March 2024

Curated by the 2023 Middlebrook Prize winner Holly Chang, the exhibition The Third Scenario is currently on view at the Art Gallery of Guelph, closing Dec. 17.
