GUELPH – International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Program students from Bishop Macdonell Catholic High School (BMCHS) have provided a prosthetic leg to a person in need.
Through the Socks for Legs program, We Help Two partners with schools to sell socks to raise funds and provide legs for amputees around the world.
Students Maddie Rossit, Mhairi Milne, Adriana Richards, Christina Morrison and Madeline Marks sold over 100 socks for their Creativity Activity Service (CAS) project.
“Part of the IB Diploma Program requires students to volunteer their time outside of class to complete a CAS project,” states language department head and BMCHS IB language and literature teacher Heather Perigo.
She learned about the We Help Two organization at an IB conference last year and felt the organization’s values would inspire and empower the students.
The students raised almost $2,200 – more than required to provide a prosthetic leg to someone in need.
“It felt really good to achieve our goal,” Milne said.
For every pack of socks sold, schools receive a pair of socks to donate.
“We have another group whose project is putting together packages for people experiencing homelessness here in Guelph,” said Rossit.
“So we’re going to donate them to help give them a little bit of a head start.”
