ERIN – Several Specialist High Skills Major (SHSM) students from Erin District High School spent the day exploring Toronto’s Graffiti Alley on Oct. 27.
While Toronto is known for its vibrant arts and culture scene, one of its hidden gems is Graffiti Alley. Located in the heart of the city, this ever-evolving urban art gallery stretches over a kilometre and showcases the works of local and international street artists.
SHSM students from Erin DHS were treated to a particularly unique SHSM day as they went on a fascinating adventure through this ever-changing canvas that boasts an array of colours, themes, and styles.
Students learned about the different types of graffiti styles including ultra realism, Wildstyle, tagging, and murals.
As part of this unique experience, students put their photography skills to the test. Armed with cameras, they explored Graffiti Alley and utilized their understanding of the nuances of framing, composition, and lighting to capture the essence of the artwork and the atmosphere that surrounds it.
Led by arts educator Lisa Fillion, students learned to appreciate the beauty and significance of art in society, as well as the role of street art in conveying powerful messages.
This special SHSM event at Graffiti Alley is more than just a field trip; it’s an opportunity for students to delve into the world of art, photography, and self-expression.
