The staff and volunteers of United Way of Guelph and Wellington are projecting a shortfall in the 2007 campaign.
“If the 2007 campaign continues at its current rate, the United Way of Guelph and Wellington will not be able to raise as much money as it did last year,” said campaign chairman Rick McCombie.
“In other words, the United Way will not be able to fund any new programs and will therefore not be able to close the gap in funding that exists in this community.”
As of last week, the volunteers of the campaign cabinet were concerned the campaign could fall more than $100,000 short from what it raised last year.
That low projection is mainly the result of corporate restructuring, labour negotiations, and economic uncertainty that is facing several workplaces throughout Guelph and Wellington County.
The United Way is seeking help from local businesses and individuals in the community who are able to address the challenges currently facing its annual campaign.
“There are many ways that organizations and individuals can help in this community”, said McCombie. “If you haven’t already done so, donate. If your workplace doesn’t hold a campaign, let us know and we can help you get one started.
“If you are a commuter, make sure to designate your United Way donation to this community.”
McCombie also stated that despite the possible shortfall in this year’s campaign, hundreds of individuals and businesses throughout the community have already shown great support to the United Way campaign.
“We are so thankful for the hard work and generosity in this community,” he said.
“There are so many people in Guelph and Wellington County giving their time and money to this year’s campaign. We hope that others will join them and do what they can to strengthen this community.”
