PALMERSTON – The Norwell District Secondary School 2023 commencement ceremony was held at the school on Nov. 3. The graduating class of 149 students was celebrated and presented with diplomas and awards.
In attendance at the ceremony were past vice principal Adam Martin, director of education Peter Sovran, superintendent Carlo Zen, trustee Robin Ross and Minto Mayor Dave Turton, along with special guest presenters from local businesses and organizations.
Valedictorian Duncan Wanless addressed the crowd with humour and wit as he spoke about the last four years at Norwell. Wanless reflected on the challenges the class faced during COVID and the resiliency they showed to get where they are today.
“We thank the community for their continued support for our graduates, and to those who provide monetary awards to graduating students each year,” school officials state.

Kate Howlett, right, received the Minto Youth Action Council Bursary, which was presented by Erin Raftis. This is given to a student who has a passion for the Minto community, exemplary community involvement and volunteerism, and attending a post-secondary program. Howlett also received the Dean Jackson Memorial Agricultural Bursary, which was established in memory of Dean by his family. The award goes to a student attending a post-secondary program related to agriculture. That award was presented by Brittni Jackson.
During commencement ceremonies at Norwell District Secondary School on Nov. 9, teacher Tyson Smith presented an Ontario Youth Apprenticeship Program Student Recognition Award to Wesley Schieck, who was one of two recipients for outstanding work in the co-op program and dedication to the trades.
Smith also presented the T.G. Minto Skilled Trades Award, given to a student because of their excellent achievement in technology, dedication to co-op and pursuit of an apprenticeship in the trades, to Declan Todd.
