BEATSON, Robert (Bob) Chalmers

It is with heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Robert (Bob) Chalmers Beatson. Bob was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, and had just celebrated his 100th birthday on August 10th. Passed away peacefully, Friday, August 18, 2023, surrounded by the love of family at St. Joseph’s Health Centre in Guelph, Ontario. Bob leaves behind his wife and soulmate, Mary (Cassie) Beatson. Bob & Mary celebrated 73 years of marriage on July 22, 2023. Will be greatly missed by his children Ron Beatson (Barb), Bruce Beatson (Deana), Linda Newens (Scott), Jim Beatson (Debbie) and Cathy Koch (Paul). He leaves treasured memories with 18 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren. Bob will also be missed by residents and staff on 3North. He was a quiet, kind, and patient man who always had a big smile for everyone. Predeceased by his mother Elizabeth & father George, his three brothers James (Jean), Dodd (Betty) and John and his four sisters Nan (George Drysdale), Mary (Robert Currie), Cathy (Jack Dopson), Betty (Ted Rooney). Bob immigrated from Scotland to Canada in 1949. He met Mary at a dance in Hespeler soon after, and they married July 22, 1950 in Fergus. Bob & Mary built a house on Silvercreek Parkway in Guelph and raised 4 children there before moving to the farm in Puslinch in 1958 where they had their 5th child. Dad worked for Standard Brands, Weston Bakery and Pirelli Wire. They farmed for many years until moving to The Royal on Gordon retirement and then to St. Joseph’s in 2017. Bob enjoyed tinkering in his workshop fixing motors, spending time in the bush splitting wood, and being surrounded by his family. He was once asked what his most memorable thing in life was and without hesitation he replied, “meeting Mary”. Special thanks to Dr. Stemerdink, nurses, PSWs, housecleaning, kitchen and all ancillary staff on 3North, Lilac Lane. The exceptional care, love and kindness shown to Dad never went unnoticed and will always be remembered. Friends will be received at the Wall-Custance Funeral Home & Chapel, 206 Norfolk St., Guelph on Wednesday, August 30, from 2:00pm – 6:00pm. Cremation has taken place. A private family graveside service will be held at a later date. Memorial donations to St. Joseph’s Health Centre, Guelph or a charity of your choice would be appreciated. A tree will be planted in memory of Robert C. Beatson in the Wall-Custance Memorial Forest.
