WOOD, John Michael

March 29, 1946 - June 25, 2023

After a long illness we are sad to announce that John passed away peacefully surrounded by love at Groves Memorial Hospital, Fergus Ont,. Beloved husband of Val for 46 years and much loved and admired father of Rory, Alexandra and Ben (Vanessa). Proud grandfather of Bianca, Esther, Eloise, Ari, Jovie, Johnny and Hayes. He thoroughly enjoyed them all even when they were standing on and tripping over his many tubes. John will be sadly missed by his sister in-law Lynne and husband Mike (UK) with whom he still loved to talk premier league results with. John was born in London but moved to the Newcastle area as a young boy where he became a life long supporter of Newcastle FC (the magpies). Moving to Liverpool for work he met Val in 1973 and a life of love and adventure began. John liked to tell the story that he was the last to know he was getting married! They moved to Canada in 1981 where John quickly established himself as a well respected Hydraulic Engineer. John loved his work and no more than his association with the “LINDE” crowd. Friendships were forged throughout the USA and Canada that remain to this day. John loved to be at the cottage on Belwood lake and had spent every summer there for 20 years. Boating around Belwood lake was a favourite pass time. Over the past few years, he had become an avid fan of Formula 1 racing and we all knew not to plan anything early morning on race weekends. After being convinced to retire (72) he and Val spent the last few winters in Venice, Florida. Where once again lasting friendships were forged. To our close group of friends who rallied around with love and support throughout this difficult year, we will be forever grateful. To the amazing Doctors and Nurses on the 3rd floor of Groves who looked after John, my sincere thanks for the amazing care and attention you gave to us all. To friends in the UK, thank you for keeping in touch. A cremation has taken place. We would love you to join us at a Celebration of life for John on Sunday, September 10th at the Breadalbane, St Andrew St W, Fergus, ON from 12:30 – 4pm. In lieu of flowers a donation to Groves Memorial Hospital would be appreciated.
