ELORA – The Elora Mill is offering “an All-Canadian exclusive gala dinner” with proceeds going to the Anita Stewart Tribute Fund.
Each August, Food Day Canada events take place across the country as a celebration of the diversity, quality and richness of ingredients produced in Canada.
The first event in 2003, an initiative of Elora’s Anita Stewart, was in response to Alberta’s mad cow disease scare.
Stewart urged Canadians to support the beef industry by cooking beef on their barbecues that day.
Stewart called it the World’s Longest Barbecue, which later morphed into Food Day Canada.
Bridge party
To kick off national events, Elora is holding a Party on the Bridge on Aug. 1 from 4 to 10pm on the Jack R. MacDonald pedestrian bridge.
“We wanted this year’s event to emulate that day by hosting Elora’s longest [barbecue] and we have several Elora restaurants [barbecuing] their favourite Canadian dishes,” said Jocelyn Maurice, managing partner of the Elora Mill, in a press release.
Food and drink tickets will be sold on the bridge. All proceeds will go to Food Day Canada. Rain date is Aug. 2.
Gala
The Elora Mill is also holding a gala fundraiser on Aug. 3 in support of the Anita Stewart Tribute Foundation.
Throughout the evening, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy food and wine pairings, live entertainment, and bid on silent auction items.
It is a chance to engage with notable Canadian food enthusiasts, chefs, philanthropists, and members of the community to shine a light on Canadian cuisine, officials say.
Tickets are $161 each; $214 with wine pairings ($75 of each ticket, or $125 with wine pairings, will be donated to the Anita Stewart Tribute Fund at the University of Guelph). Charitable donation receipts will be provided.
