Guelph/Eramosa council discusses parking bylaws, encroachment policies, foreman’s retirement

BRUCEDALE – Parking bylaws, encroachment policies, and foreman Rod McClure’s retirement were topics of discussion during the Guelph/Eramosa council meeting on June 19.

No parking on curves

Bylaw enforcement and property standards officer Ivan Lunevski presented a parking bylaw report during the council meeting, including changes regarding parking on curved parts of roads.

“Parking on a curve is not safe,” Lunevski said, and the rule prohibiting it is standard across all municipalities, with liability falling to drivers to know they can’t park on curves, regardless of signage.

However, “to make it easy for residents,” the township will be erecting signs on curves where parking has been an issue, Lunevski said.

During business hours, parking bylaws in Guelph/Eramosa are enforced by the township’s bylaw officers.  Outside of business hours, such as on weekends, holidays and at night, the OPP enforces the bylaws.

Encroachment policy

Township clerk Amanda Knight presented a report that included a minor amendment to the encroachment policy discussed by council on April 24.

She noted township staff can deal with most encroachment issues instead of every infraction coming to council, and the policy was amended to reflect this.

“Most of these encroachments are minor in nature – they can be looked at by the director of public works,” she noted, and when there are unusual circumstances staff will bring the encroachment to council.

Councillors approved the amendment, with councilor Mark Bowmeester noting the change is “fantastic.”

Road foreman retiring

Roads foreman Rod McClure is retiring in July, after 25 years with the township.

Mayor Chris White said McClure is well respected and well liked – “all I ever got was positive feedback” – and that his work over the decades has been “fantastic.”

“When I know Rod is out doing something I’m feeling ‘Okay, I don’t have to worry about that anymore – that will be taken care of,’” White added.
