GUELPH – The Guelph Black Heritage Society (GBHS) is offering its “Dream Makers” summer camp programs again this year.
The GBHS desires to provide a safe haven for young people; an area for them to develop friendships, learn from mentors, and feed their souls, a press release states.
The camp is a space where kids and teens have the freedom to be creative, the freedom to dream, and the freedom to realize anything is possible.
This program is open to all members of the community and there is no charge to register. Space is limited.
There will be two sessions of this summer. Each is two-weeks long, running from 10am to 2pm, Monday through Friday at the Heritage Hall, located at 83 Essex Street in Guelph.
The first session is from July 3 to 14, and the second runs August 14 to 25.
This first week of session one is “Code Black” — a Black-centered program where students will learn how to build a basic, interactive website using HTML and Java coding.
The second week of the first session is “Entrepreneurial Camp,” where students will learn how to create their own business name, concept, and logo.
Session one also includes a visit from guest speaker Kween from The Kween Company.
By the end of the program, participants will have the skills to create their own website and an opportunity to showcase their work.
For the second session, the first week is Entrepreneurial Camp, and the second week is “Engineering Camp.”
Students will gain an understanding of what engineering is and the different fields of engineering.
The program includes an introduction to the design process, and basic hands-on experience in various areas of engineering.
By the end of the program, students should have a basic understanding of electrical, mechanical, civil, and software engineering concepts, and be able to apply these concepts to solve problems.
There will be a visit from Guest speaker Kelvin Nyeusi-Mawazo, from Black Sun Comics.
