Established in 2022, the Wellington County Library’s Seed Library was created with the goal of providing free access to seeds for anyone interested in gardening. If you’re on the fence about starting your own garden, keep in mind that there are many benefits to growing your own food. With the price of groceries these days, who wouldn’t want to save some money by eating great-tasting vegetables grown in your garden? You are in control of your food and helping to promote sustainability, not to mention staying active in the process.
Early sowing seed varieties are available now at our three Seed Library locations: the Fergus, Hillsburgh and Palmerston branches. More varieties will be added as the growing season progresses. You never know what you’ll find when you stop by, whether they are seeds for flowers, vegetables, or herbs. The variety of seeds depends on the variety of donations we receive.
Keep us in mind as your garden produces throughout the season. We will be looking for donations to keep the seed library running year after year. For more information about the Seed Library and how to donate seeds, visit our website at www.wellington.ca/SeedLibrary.
You will also find materials at your local library to guide you through the gardening process:
– Starter Vegetable Gardens: 24 No-fail Plans for Small Organic Gardens by Barbara Pleasant;
– We Garden Together! Projects for Kids: Learn, Grow and Connect with Nature by Jane S. Hirschi;
– Veg Out: A Stress Free Guide to Creating Your First Vegetable Garden by Heather Rodino; and
– Beginning Seed Saving for the Home Gardener by Jim Ulager.
If you’re looking for another reason to stop by, check out one of the programs we have going on this month. For a full list of programs and registration, please visit our website at www.wellington.ca/LibraryCalendar.
