WELLINGTON COUNTY – The County of Wellington has been named by Call2Recycle Canada, Inc. as a 2022 Leader in Sustainability.
The Leader in Sustainability Award is granted each year to organizations that display exceptional commitment to battery recycling, states a Feb. 14 press release from the county.
The county’s Solid Waste Services division collected 10,081 kilograms of household batteries through the Call2Recycle program during 2022, making it one of the program’s top-performing partners.
This is the second year in a row Wellington County has received the award, joining a group of major retailers, waste recyclers, municipalities, and businesses, “setting a high standard for waste diversion and environmental excellence,” the release states.

“This award recognizes the residents of Wellington County and their commitment to protect our environment and keep hazardous materials out of our landfill,” said Warden Andy Lennox, who noted the award “also demonstrates the accessibility of this program with battery drop-offs available at libraries and waste facilities throughout the County.”
“We are proud to have contributed significantly to the astounding count of more than 40 million batteries Call2Recycle has collected and diverted from landfill, since 1997,” stated solid waste services committee chair Steve O’Neill.
“Each year, Canadians recycle more and more of their used batteries with Call2Recycle thanks to the ongoing partnership of organizations like Wellington County. This partnership speaks to a real commitment to sustainability and makes a significant difference,” said Joe Zenobio, president of Call2Recycle Canada, Inc.
“The support we get from “Wellington County helps us achieve our mission of maximizing battery diversion from the waste stream, which in turn protects wildlife, the environment and our communities.”
Call2Recycle is the provincially-approved consumer battery collection and recycling program for British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Quebec, and Prince Edward Island, and operates as a registered Producer Responsibility Organization (PRO) in Ontario according to the Ontario Batteries Regulation.
