WELLINGTON NORTH – The township will be presenting its annual Senior of the Year award in Arthur on April 20.
The award is part of the provincial Honours and Awards Program, providing municipalities the opportunity to nominate a community member over the age of 65 for official recognition.
Seniors who have enriched their communities are eligible for nominations, which can be put forward by councillors, municipal staff and community members.
Local nominations will be discussed and a winner chosen in a council meeting closed to the public on Feb. 21.
“The discussion is in closed as there are many good candidates and this gives council the opportunity to discuss the candidates freely,” economic development officer Dale Small stated in an email to the Advertiser.
A Feb. 6 staff report to council states that once a selection is made, the nomination will be sent to the province with an award certificate to be returned the following month.
This year’s award recipient will be announced during National Volunteer Week at the township’s Volunteer and Newcomer Celebration, taking place from 4:30 to 7pm on April 20 at the Arthur and Area Community Centre.
Past recipients include Faye Craig, who received the award in 2021, and Kay Ayres in 2022.
The event is open to all volunteers and newcomers to the community and requires registration.
Registration can be completed online or to register by phone call Brianna at 519-848-3620 x.4242.
