FERGUS – After the Battle of Vimy Ridge in 1917, a Canadian soldier gathered acorns, brought them back home to Canada, and planted them on his farm.
Over 100 years later, a group of volunteers completed a mission to repatriate “Vimy Oak” saplings descended from those acorns, back to Vimy Ridge, and distribute Vimy Oak saplings across Canada, several of which are right here in Fergus and Elora.
Learn about the Vimy Oaks Project as Neighbourwoods hosts guest speaker Bob Domoney to talk about the project and its implications for tree health and our own health.
The event will be held Nov. 30, 7:30 to 9pm at the Fergus Legion, 500 Blair St.
Admission is by donation; Neighbourwoods members are free.
“Join us to hear the inspiring story of how this remarkable project unfolded, to promote the memory and legacy of Canadians who fought in WWI,” states a press release.
Domoney spent six years post-retirement volunteering for the not-for-profit Vimy Oaks Legacy Corporation.
His involvement included development of operating systems and the current website, and leading the distribution of over 900 Vimy Oaks across Canada.
