KENILWORTH – Wondering what to do with that old jack-o’-lantern?
Mapletwiss Farm is hosting its third annual “Pumpkin Party” event from 10am to 4pm on Nov. 6 at 8507 Line 6 in Kenilworth.
Anyone wanting to “upcycle” their ghoulish gourds is welcome to stop by the farm to feed old pumpkins (free of decorations) to the pigs, sheep, goats, cattle and even laying hens, on-site.
“Our [animals] can eat them … they love them; it’s a great treat,” said Amanda Twiss.
And kids can learn a little about where their food comes from too.
Painted pumpkins or those treated with preservants such as bleach can still be donated for compost, which will later be spread on fields with manure.
Twiss says the event has grown each year, with hundreds turning out in 2021.
A bonfire will be lit if there’s snow and hot chocolate and apple cider will be available as well.
Local vendors, including Magpie’s Bakery, Mapleton Acres, Knightswood Clay House, The Revival Company, Stewart Signature Designs, and Farnham Flats Beauty and Bath will also be there retailing their wares. Of course, the Mapletwiss farm store, stocked with meat, eggs and maple syrup, will also be open.
A pumpkin drop-off bin will also be available out front for anyone unable to make it on Nov. 6.
